      Retaining top talent is important to every organization's core capabilities. Advanced Analytics teams are developing machine learning and predictive models to identify key drivers of attrition to enable leaders to make better workforce decisions.

      Digital Analytics
      Insurance industry is undergoing a significant digital transformation across functions to form the basis for customer centricity. The Advanced Analytics team is deploying digital analytics measurement, reporting, and optimization frameworks to support the digital growth focus. Digital Analytics will enable Manulife to evaluate marketing effectiveness, facilitate data-driven digital interactions and personalization, and open new data channels to enrich our understanding of our customers.

      Modernized Underwriting
      Buying a life insurance product can be a lengthy and time-consuming process. To improve our customer experience, the Advanced Analytics team developed a predictive underwriting model that significantly reduces the time to underwrite a policy for qualified applicants. For those applicants, the algorithm can predict smoker status removing the need to undertake specific medical tests.

      Fraud Detection
      With extremely large volumes of daily insurance claims, identifying fraudulent claims can be a very challenging task. The current process for many organizations is very labour intensive. However, this represents an opportunity for our Advanced Analytics teams develop fraud detection models through supervised machine learning and anomaly detection techniques to better support our claims department.

      I’m a senior director in Asia regional Advanced Analytics team based in HK. Over the past year or so, this new regional team has come a long way activating the team mandate, which is to serve as the key business enabler by providing analytics solutions across the business value chain. This means turning complex data into insights, through in-depth quantitative analysis. It means uncovering customer product purchase path to recommend the next best offer to empower front-line sales staff. It also means building predictive models that predict the likelihood of future events throughout a customer’s lifecycle - be it likelihood to buy or likelihood to lapse, just to name a few, for better decision making. One of the predictive models we built for Japan was utilized for campaign targeting by local agency channel. The model predictions generated really strong incremental lift, and the campaign was able to more than double its average APE per lead.

      The Asia regional analytics team only has a handful of team members. While all being seasoned analytics professionals, we each came in with unique areas of strength and expertise. It feels truly refreshing to work in an environment with such great team spirit where we learn from each other and back each other up when faced with challenges. Manulife operates in 12 countries in Asia. Working in the regional team also means there is great diversity in the people, business situations, and culture background that we deal with on daily basis. This, in my opinion, is the added benefit and excitement to the job.

      I’m a Senior Data Scientist on the Group Functions Advanced Analytics team. My main responsibility is to develop models using advanced analytics and big data technologies to increase the business value across the entire organization. Some of my projects are related to Product Development and Services, Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management. The most challenging part of my work is to be able to translate a business problem into a data science problem and develop appropriate solutions/recommendations using quantitative methods. The type of data I’m analyzing is mostly unstructured (images, text) and my models are based on machine learning techniques derived from computer vision and natural language processing. The tools I use most are Python and specialized machine learning libraries (i.e. sklearn, tensorflow) as well as Spark (Hive/Hadoop) in a Linux environment.

      The Group Functions Advanced Analytics team is composed of bright-minded and inspired professionals which makes it a very exciting team to be part of. The technologies used are cutting-edge and being short of data to analyze is not a possibility in our industry. In addition, frequent collaboration with business people, technologists and senior management makes this a very good place for learning.

      I’m a Data Scientist for the Investment Division Advanced Analytics team. Much of my day is spent working with clients in the Investment Division to understand where innovative analytics can improve their business, then obtaining and engineering their data for such analyses. Once the data is ready, I’ll run the necessary analyses to solve our clients’ business problem, and work with them to implement corresponding business changes to derive value. For example, I’ve worked with our trade operations teams to produce machine learning algorithms that determine the types of trades most likely to end up failing or getting cancelled due to error, which allows trade ops to reallocate resources to prevent future issues.

      The tools I work with depend on the kind of data I’m examining, which includes Excel spreadsheets, large-scale investment data pulled from vendors and stored in SQL servers, and data stored in our new Hadoop data lake. I help our clients visualize their data with BI tools like Power BI and run my stats and modelling with R and Python. This highlights the best part of working in Advanced Analytics at Manulife – we get to use all sorts of technology and statistical techniques to provide innovative and practical solutions to real problems. The combination of tech, stats, and business understanding allows us to make a unique impact on both an industry and company that have existed for over 150 years.

      My name is Sabya and I’m a data engineer in Advanced Analytics, Canadian Division. A typical day for me consists of working in collaboration with business teams across Canadian division to understand the analytical data requirements of the project. From there, I work to translate the data into a form which is suitable for data mining or modeling predictive analysis. I typically use a variety of tools including data management tools such as SQL, open source tools like Python, R, Git and modeling tools like SPSS. I recently completed couple of interesting projects on predicting fraudulent claims using various these open source tools and combining the data with Google Maps API.

      The best part of working on the Advance Analytics team is to have the opportunity to work along with a diverse set of bright minded colleagues in one of the most interesting technology areas. Some examples would be image recognition, sentiment analysis and optimizing wealth management.

      I am a co-op student in Advanced Analytics, US Division. I just finished my third-year of Mathematics/Chartered Financial Analyst program in University of Waterloo. During my 4-month co-op term, I’ve been supporting various projects including Social Media Analytics, Survey Modeling, Data Engineering, Clustering Analysis to name a few. By working on different projects, I’ve had the opportunity to work with several amazing experts in this field, and gained solid practical skills with R, SQL and Tableau. The co-op experience with Advanced Analytics at Manulife has been truly valuable and will be an asset as I head into future study terms and begin my career.
